The Toronto Art Expo was held this weekend (March 19 to the 22nd) at the Metro Toronto Convention Center hosting an impressive array of exhibitors showing works ranging from pencil art to fine metal sculptures. Even for someone like me who isn't so inclined to appreciate art to it's fullest, well I actually loved the show and was amazed at how much incredible talent the city and surrounding area has to offer.
There was also an opening gala on a Thursday, March 19 which included Nagata Shachu Taiko drumming with Kiyoshi Nagata, The Whirling Dervishes of Turkey, and Jane Bunnet with the Spirit of Havana and other special guests in a Cuban Extravaganza. And there was also some jazz performances scheduled through the weekend as well.
Some featured artists of the show featured Nola and the common a watercolor artists, René Roy who is actually exhibiting from Montréal and has always been fascinated by the particular beauty of Northern landscapes; their simplicity, their total lack of artifice and the poetry emanating from them should become completely captivated by them and as such they are her primary source of inspiration in her watercolor paintings as well.
Deborah Tate-Sears is another traditional landscape artist with unique approach the watercolor medium using a limited palette of colors she starts her paintings with pale washes and builds upon transparent layers to desired intensity and detail. Debra has a fascination with light in the inch interpretation of law light in a transparent medium to Brett uses the British heritage landscape of southern Ontario and the 19th-century British landscape artist John Constable and John Sel-Cotman for inspiration.
Stunning, seemingly impossible structures in beautiful bronze by Cammy was one of the highlights of the show for me and exemplified an amazing balance of creativity and and skill in the art cast in bronze it demonstrates the strength of the canopy while the delicate twigs exposes more fragile nature.
