A kid’s movie you might say. But ahhh, you would be so wrong. UP! is a current animated feature that is available for viewing in both regular and 3D versions. I myself went with no expectations for myself, only for the class of grade one students with whom I attended this feature. They loved it and sat with rapt faces turned towards the screen, laughing in all the right places and thoroughly enjoying the plot and effects.
And yes, there were many moments to be enjoyed by the youngsters. But I was totally charmed by this movie - so much so that I texted my husband afterwards of my sentiments, suggesting that he go to see it as well. (I would love to enjoy it a second time). It is a moving account of a young boy and a young girl, both a bit eccentric in their love of explorers, maps and adventure, who meet and have a life together, in all of its ups and downs. Then of how Carl, suddenly alone, feeling sad, lonely and regretful, becomes simultaneously inspired and annoyed by Russell, an 8-year old Wilderness Explorer who comes knocking at his door to earn his "Senior's Badge".
Carl goes on to have an adventure of which he never dreamed, and, as fate would have it, Russell is right by his side. Carl learns some valuable, heart-warming lessons on his journey to South America to fulfill his childhood fantasy.
UP is the newest entry by Disney-Pixar and they do not disappoint. With voices from the likes of Ed Asner and Christopher Plummer, the show is of high quality from beginning to end. The animation is wonderful and the story is entertaining, with many layers of content: those to hit the young crowd, and that which goes above them and is understood only by people who have seen more of life and experienced the joys and sorrows that come with living it fully.
This is one to offer to take the grand-kids. Then again, this is also one to quietly enjoy all on your own.
