Audio books have a huge impact not only on visually-impaired individuals but on regular, normal people like us. It is not bulky, which means it does not occupy a massive amount of space, it is light and handy, and to top it all of, a lot of people can share the story or anecdote or any topic of a certain book at the same time.

Audio books have various forms. You might have been already born when the advent of cassette tapes occurred. Yes, there are audio or talking books in the cassette tape format. Of course, as technology progressed, audio converted books took the form of compact discs. Then came the MP3 format, smaller and more handy. There is also.aac or Advanced Audio Coding. Not surprisingly, the power of internet is now being utilized in the propagation and easy distribution of audio books - downloadable audios.

To maximize sales and popularity, some authors release their traditional book publications with the downloadable audio format. Audios can be a lot of fun, though not as mentally stimulating as the traditional book. For instance, there are two types of audio formatted books, the unabridged, and of course, the abridged. The unabridged is the word for word reading of the entire book while the abridged as the exact opposite. Some authors go for the abridged to shorten the digital audio size, therefore minimize cost. What is fun about audios is a lot of them, especially popular novels, come in full dramatized versions. And some even comes with a complete cast, sound effects, and musical accompaniment, for additional audio excitement. In fact, some radio programs have started serializing books. They feature books and then have it read by an actor.

To date, there are more than a thousand sites that distribute audio translated books online, some of them even for free. That actually is the dilemma of famous writers, the wanton proliferation of their books, hence, they came up with Digital Rights Management. In the long run, it would seem that audios may take the place of traditional printed publication because of a lot of factors. Economically, audio books are way cheaper. They never run out of stock. It's easy to store them as well. They do not take too much space, in fact, if saved on an mp3 player, a hundred of them can fit in a single pants pocket. They do not require shipping and handling, which may cause damage to the physical book.

Nowadays, the CNIB Library(Canada) and the National Library of Congress in the United States provide audio books to those who need it, especially the visually-challenged. A huge percentage of audio book purchases are done by libraries so expect a lot of those when you visit them
