Seniors, especially those who are now living mostly at home or in retirement villas have little option for entertainment beside the TV, movies, and music. If you’re thinking about giving your grandma an iPod for her birthday, here are some tips to make it worthwhile for her to fully enjoy. These ideas are great for those in their mid-fifties and even up to their late 80’s. If they love music, these ideas will be highly appreciated.

Loaded Music
If you’re planning to get your grandma or grandpa an iPod, it’s a great idea to find out their musical preferences. More than the gift of an iPod, the gift of music is what you’re really giving. You can’t expect them to know how to sync an iPod or to source their favorite music. You need to put in a lot of thought and effort in making playlists and loading your iPods with songs.

More likely than not, loading the iPod is a one time event – right before you give the gift. Load the iPod with all the songs your elders love, and if you’ve exhausted that, you can fill it up with one or two of their favorite movies.

Speakers
Another good idea is to get an iPod with accompanying speakers. You can get decent speakers for half the price of a mid-range iPod. You don’t even have to splurge for high fidelity speakers. There are speaker systems available from makers such as Creative and Altec-Lansing that will be strong enough to fill up a mid-sized room. A speaker system will allow your elder folks to enjoy their music while lying down, sitting by the window or just resting on their favorite chair.

Headphones
When not in the room – say the garden or some other place around the house – a good quality headset is in order. You can get one for even less than the price of a speaker system. This will allow grandma and grandpa to bring their iPod and enjoy their favorite music anywhere. Don’t rely on just the included ear buds, as these can easily fall off. Headsets can stay on and also can deliver better sound quality for failing ears.

Set Playlists
Probably the most important aspect of giving an iPod as a gift is to set playlists. Even if you have the proper music, the proper speaker system, the proper headset, if gramps and grandma can’t operate the iPod, everything is for naught. The best thing you can do to make sure they can enjoy their new shiny toy is to make playlists. Making playlists on the iPod is easy, so make sure there are enough playlists to provide variety of entertainment options depending on their musical preference.

Playing playlists is also one of the easiest tasks to memorize when it comes to using iPods. You can just easily use playlists to access all the songs on your iPod.

Protective Skins
Another possible accessory is an iPod protective skin. This will ensure that even if your gift is dropped, it will survive to play another day. It will also provide a way for grandma to grip the iPod better.
With these tips, although you may get set back a bit more than just buying an iPod, you make sure that the recipient gets to enjoy your gift fully, and that’s more important that the cost.
