Are you finding that you are having problems remembering certain things, such as people's names? If you are then you are not alone as there are millions of people in the same position as you. Fortunately there are plenty of techniques that you could use to improve your memory.

Before we take a look at how to improve your memory, let us look at what components our memory consists of. There are three components of memory known as imprint, retention and recall. It is through imprint component of our memory that we are able to store any new information our brain receives. As for the retention component it is used to help us to create a lasting impression about something in our mind. The recall component allows us to retrieve information we have stored in our brain at any time we need to. So what can one do to improve one's memory? Below we offer some tips that you may find extremely useful.

Tip 1 - It is important that you pay attention whenever you have to store new information in your memory. If you don't take notice of what you want to remember then of course the chance of it being stored is greatly reduced. If you make the thing you need to remember interesting, it will help you to remember it more easily.

Tip 2 - A way to memorize something is through making associations relating to the things you need to remember. Neurologists have discovered that when making new associations with things individual cells in the brain will make physical connections with others in response to these associations. So the more associations you make between any information you are receiving the better chance you have of retaining it.

Tip 3 - When you are attempting to learn something new you may find yourself having problems trying to recall what you have just learnt. One thing you can do is to write it down a number of times or just repeat the information to yourself over and over again out loud. Then you can gradually lengthen the time between repeating and eventually you will find it becomes deeply embedded in your memory.

Tip 4 - Another great tip on improving memory is to use all your senses rather than just relying on one or two, say sight or sound. For example if you are trying to remember something important such as an exam, as you read the information in front of you try to hear the sound the page makes as you turn it. In addition, you may find that your sense of smell can be a very strong aid in helping you to remember certain things. For example when you meet new people and want to remember their names, think about how they smell. This can often help you with recalling them easier at a later date.

Some people may be born with good memory but almost anyone can learn to use techniques to help us improving memory. With enough practice you will soon find that you are no longer as forgetful as you used to. Leo has been writing articles online for nearly 4 years now.
