Maybe you have heard about folks using the Detox Diet process to lose weight and perhaps you were asking yourself what it was all about. Well the Detox Diet or "Detoxification" is a term used to describe a cleansing of the system, ridding it of nasty toxins in a rather dramatic fashion. For this reason, you may not find many physicians proposing it.
While the idea of detoxifying your system sounds good in theory, there is no solid proof that detoxifying your system does anything but lighten your pocketbook. First of all, the detox diet is meant to strengthen organs such as your skin, intestines, liver, lungs, kidneys, and lymphatic system. Because the nature of the detox diet is to cleanse out the liver and intestines, it is also believed by proponents of the diets that it will promote the excretion of stored toxins. There is no scientific proof (that I can find) that the excretion of ‘stored toxins’ will do anything useful for your body.
The methods used in the diet are varied. They range from colonic irrigation, bowel enemas and fasting to saunas, massages and body brushing. Herbal supplements such as milk thistle, detox drinks, and liver tonics are highly recommended in the detox diet, as well as many dietary changes.
So the people who are touting this type of radical diet calim it improves everything from concentration and focus to more serious issues such as cancerous cells and heart disease. Others say that it improves symptoms of pre-existing conditions such as fatigue, joint pain, headache, poor concentration, anxiety, colds, heartburn, and gas. Also noted is the fact that the diet is primarily recommended as part of a chronic illness (such as autoimmune deficiency, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, or heart disease) treatment. However, finding any scientific proof of these claims (like a lot of the other claims in the detox diet) is difficult at best.
The detox diet asks you to make a great change in your diet. The foods allowed in the plan vary widely between dieters, but generally fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, herbal teas, and (a lot of) water is allowed. Because the nature of these foods is healthy, it is very likely that people - whether they use the detoxification system or not - will lose weight with this diet. Which may also very well mean the detox part of the detox diet isn't really necessary - at least from a physical stand point. The reality is though, that nutritional shortcomings are often the reslut fo poor diet planning which lacks fundamental food group considerations. Eliminating dairy products, for example, will dramatically cut the amount of calcium you receive, and can therefore lead to osteoporosis.
Some people go full throttle when trying new wieght loss plans and that is no different with a detox diet. However, because of the radical substance change to your diet, this is one of those plans you really need to consult with your doctor about. It's better to know the potential side effecta ahead of time so that they will not be misinterpreted a week or so into your diet. Thanks for reading.
