Aromatherapy has grown popular because of the relaxing influence it provides us. Nothing eases a tired body than a warm bath and some fragrant aromas wafting around you. But there is more to aromatherapy than just the smells. Scientific research done on aromatherapy proves that it affects our body, mind, and emotions.

Chemical interaction between the essential oils used in aromatherapy and the body give tangible physical benefits and produces specific therapeutic effects. For example, a bubble bath with certain aromas helps improve memory – perfect for seniors.

Aromatherapy uses oils from plants to alleviate physical and psychological conditions. This is a perfect thing for seniors who usually display physical changes associated with aging.

Massaging with Essential Oils
A simple massage makes you feel good. It is a fundamental type of therapy that has been used for thousands of years, and is a basic need for us as human beings. We are social beings and the need to be touched is part of our psyche. Massage improves circulation and relaxes muscles all the while giving comfort for the one being massaged. This combined with essential oils produces a powerful effect and can be particularly beneficial to older, sensitive muscles, joints skin and bodies.

Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream, and can provide the following benefits:

•    Eases muscle pain
•    Elimination of toxins
•    Improved circulation
•    Improved digestion
•    Lowers blood pressure
•    Reduces stress
•    Releases endorphins
•    Stimulates the immune system

Baths and Showers
For those who cannot have massages (for medical reasons), you can try bathing with essential oils. If you have trouble getting into or out of a tub, then showering is also an option. There are many alternatives to bath oils such as essential oil-infused soaps and gels.

You also have the option of using essential oils on a sponge or bath cloth. Allow yourself to inhale the scents and fumes to get maximum benefits.

But be sure to use carrier oils with the essential oils before applying to your skin. Some essential oils are too strong if in pure form. Carrier oils can be vegetable, nut, or seed oils. These themselves have therapeutic benefits. A general rule for mixing is 3-5 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil.

Dos and Don’ts

Do ask your doctor if it’s alright to use essential oils as a supplementary activity. There may be some treatments that do not go well with essential oils so ask first. If you get the go signal from your doctor, start slowly at first. Don’t rush in and buy all the sweet smelling stuff you see. Get a sample and try it on a small patch of skin first to test for allergies. This is important for people with sensitive skin and for seniors who are more prone to skin irritations.

Adding aromatherapy to your lifestyle will help keep you healthy by helping you be more relaxed and de-stressed. Even if you have no condition that you want to correct, the simple fact that it makes us feel good is good enough reason to indulge in it.
