Most pet owners treat their pets as if they were part of the family, buying them top quality foods and accessories or showering them with lots of extra attention; some people treat them better than their own family members. In a way these acts of love and kindness towards another creature make us feel better about ourselves and remind us we still have the capacity for these feelings, no matter what the situation.

Besides being great companions, pets have the ability to get rid of our depression and decrease our stress level. A treatment for patients with terminal cancer, involves leaving them in the company of friendly dogs for one day a week; this results in an immediate change in the patients moods. As well as relieving depression in cancer patients, doctors also noticed a marked decrease in the growth of cancer cells during those periods. The bottom line is, pets can have a positive influence on our well being; so take care of your pets and they will take care of you.

Whether you have a dog, cat, rabbit, hamster or even a horse, if you can afford it, their health should be one of our top priorities. There are so many types of animals out there and each has different needs, so in order to maintain their healthy bodies and long life spans we need to learn more about our specific animals needs. Find out what your animal likes to eat, what foods are nutritionally good for them or do they need to have vaccinations against certain diseases. Here are a few ways to improve your pet's healthy and strong. Because there are so many types of domesticated animals around, this guide lists just two of our favourite pets.

Dogs are wonderfully social creatures that can sometimes be mistaken for acting like humans. It is easy to get attached to these pet and also hard to let go; if you're a parent dogs make great play friends for children and can help to teach them responsibility. Nutrition. The nutritional needs of dogs is similar to human beings, this need changes over the span of their lifetime. Buy high quality commercial foods and feed them the right dose according to their age. Worms. These intestinal parasites are common in dogs, as they tend to eat and lick everything. They are more harmful to young pups then adults and can be treated with de-worming tablets or food mixtures, bought from your local vets. Fleas. Every dog will contract a bad case of fleas at some point in their lives, they are not only irritating to your dog, but can also begin to infest your house and you. To check for these insects pull a fine toothcomb through their coat and put the debris in water, if there is a brownish discolouration then your animal has fleas. Treat this condition with specially bought shampoos, it need to be done thoroughly in order to kill the eggs as well.

I personally love cats; they are clean animals that don't need too much attention. Perhaps not as friendly as dogs, but they have very individual characters and have been given god like status in several ancient civilisations. Nutrition. Cats can be very fussy eaters, so try a few different brands before settling on his or her favourite. Their nutritional needs are similar to dogs and need to be increased as your cat grows. Go with natural organic varieties to give your cat a boost of extra energy. Neutering. Cats go through endless stages of heat and tend to be quite promiscuous animals. To prevent a range of illnesses from an over active sex life, it's best to neuter your cat. Check for bumps. The most common illness in cats is cancer; check your cat for lumps and bumps on the skin surface. Run your hands through its hair, checking between leg joints and around the neck.
